Family dog that attacked baby still on Campbelltown property

The family dog that bit the face of a newborn baby girl as she slept in her bassinet remains at the Campbelltown property with the council deeming it “not a danger to the public” for now.

A source at the local council confirmed to ninemsn that the family had not yet surrendered their Alaskan Malamute to be euthanised.

The investigation into the attack, which ended with the one-week-old baby undergoing emergency surgery for her facial injuries, will resume on Saturday.

“The dog is currently contained on the property, and we have deemed it not to be a danger to the public,” the source said.

Police will re-interview the parents this weekend to gather more information about the attack and establish the fate of the family pet.

The family may choose to surrender the dog to rangers or the investigation could classify the dog as dangerous, which would see it put to sleep.

The baby girl is reportedly stable in the ICU of Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick, following surgery on Monday morning.

Police told ninemsn that the Graham baby’s injuries were not considered to be life threatening.

The attack took place as the baby girl was sleeping in her bassinet following an early morning feed. The couple were awoken at around 3:30am by the sound of their child screaming.
