A 100m exclusion zone enforced around a western Sydney police station was sparked by an "unusually shaped" parcel from Victoria Police.

Officers enforced the zone, which took in police headquarters and an adjacent railway station, in Wentworthville today at about midday.

Police were seen holding positions and redirecting traffic, but Sydney Trains did not stop transport services.

NSW Fire and Rescue and the bomb squad were deployed to the scene.

A spokesman from the former confirmed the scare had been caused by an "unusually shaped" parcel.

The package, wrapped in plain brown paper, had been dropped off at the police station's unmanned front desk without being signed for.

An officer later approached the desk to see the mysterious parcel waiting, sparking the lockdown.
