A young woman has died after a large branch fell on her head the day before a music festival on NSW's Central Coast.

Gosford Inspector Bruce Coates told AAP the 21-year-old Canberra woman was working for the three-day Lost Paradise music festival, in the Glenworth Valley, when she sat under a gum tree with a number of others on Wednesday.

A branch, which Insp Coates said was metres long, struck her on the head and knocked her unconscious about 4pm.

She was taken to Westmead hospital and died on the first day of the festival on Thursday, he said.
