Ex-federal MP facing child abuse charges

A former federal MP "strenuously" denies historical child sex abuse charges he's facing relating to his time as the head of a boys' home, his lawyer says.

Alasdair Webster, who was the member for Macquarie in NSW from 1984 to 1993, has been charged with 10 counts of indecent assault as well as assault occasioning actual bodily harm, buggery and attempted buggery.

He's accused of abusing boys between 1978 and 1980 at the Daruk Training School, a boys' homes on the outskirts of Sydney for juvenile offenders.

Before being elected to Canberra, Webster was chief superintendent at Daruk.

"The charges will be strenuously denied," Webster's lawyer, Manny Conditsis, told AAP on Thursday.

"There's a long history to it. My client has been very cooperative with police. There is a fair bit of material that is yet to come out."

Webster, now 86, was issued with a court attendance notice and is due to face Penrith Local Court on March 31.

After losing his seat in the 1993 election, Webster quit the Liberal Party and later ran unsuccessfully for Fred Nile's Christian Democrat Party at several elections.
