Elderly man falls five metres from balcony

An elderly man has undergone emergency surgery after he fell five metres from a balcony while working on a home on Sydney's northern beaches.
The 84-year-old suffered rib fractures, lower back injuries, a punctured lung and a suspected broken leg when he plummeted onto steep terrain at the Avalon property on Friday morning.
The man was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
