Drones to help fight NSW fires

NSW firefighters can now deploy drones to quickly spot and assess fires.

The two new drones will provide Fire and Rescue NSW with real-time images of areas too dangerous to access and allow for quick damage assessments of fires, chemical spills and natural disasters.

The aerial robots are part of a multi-million dollar technology upgrade to the state's fire service, which is also getting two mobile command centres and more than 180 fire trucks fitted with wi-fi technology.

The trucks will get rolling information such as live weather, maps and pre-incident plans via a 100-metre wi-fi bubble.

Emergency Services Minister David Elliott says the rollout will make it easier for firefighters, who often have to make life and death decisions with very little information.
