A man has allegedly dragged a driver out of his car and beaten him before kicking the man's windscreen in during a horror road rage attack on the Hume Highway.

The incident kicked off when a 41-year-old man was merging on to the Hume Highway near Mittagong on Monday afternoon at the same time as a 21-year-old driver in another car, leading to a dispute.

The 41-year-old driver allegedly rammed the younger man's car a short time after and both drivers pulled over, with the older man forcibly dragging the 21-year-old out of his car.

The older man allegedly attacked the younger man before the 21-year-old managed to break free and flee by running down the highway.

The older man jumped in the younger man's car and gave chase before jumping out and running after him.

When the man wasn't able to catch him he allegedly jumped on the other man's car and kicked in the windscreen, causing major damage.

The man will appear in Gouldburn court on Tuesday charged with a range of offences including unlicensed driving.

The young man was taken to hospital to be treated for jaw and hip injuries and cuts and abrasions.
