A driver is lucky to be alive after his car fell 12 metres off an embankment onto railway tracks south of Sydney.

The 34-year-old man from Long Jetty reportedly fell asleep while travelling along the Hume Highway at Yanderra in the southern highlands, shortly before 11pm last night.

His blue Ford Falcon came to a rest on its side across the southbound tracks.
