Drunk driver of packed car pleads guilty

A Brazilian man who was caught drink-driving with eight passengers in his car, which had a flat tyre, has pleaded guilty to two offences in a Sydney court.

Arthur Rohsig, 23, appeared before the Waverley Local Court on Wednesday, charged with high-range PCA and driving with more than four unrestrained passengers.

Rohsig was pulled over in Phillip Bay, in Sydney's southeast on April 30 after police noticed the car he was driving had a flat tyre.

They then discovered eight passengers in the car, seven of them crammed on top of one another in the back seat.

The accused returned an alleged breath test of 0.172 and had to hold onto objects in order to keep his balance, according to police.

Rohsig, who has lived in Australia for two years on a student visa, laughed when police explained the seriousness of the offence, according to documents tendered to the court.

"The accused has no regard for Australian law or road legislation, the safety of the community and he is a danger to himself and others when in control of a motor vehicle," the police document read.

Police said Rohsig, who lives in Bondi Junction, was uncooperative throughout the investigation.

"That is just a shocking traffic accident waiting to happen," Magistrate Lisa Stapleton told the court.

Rohsig will reappear before the court on May 24.
