NSW govt wants no PokeStop at memorial

The NSW government is fed up with Pokemon Go players trying to catch 'em all at sacred sites such as Sydney's Anzac Memorial.

The apps' maker, Niantic, has been asked to remove the memorial as a "PokeStop" location, with Veterans' Affairs Minister David Elliott saying it is "a space of quiet and personal contemplation" and "not appropriate for Pokemon players to be 'lured' inside".

"Large numbers of Pokemon players have entered the Memorial to catch Pokemon since the game's release... forcing security guards to remind players that they are a commemorative area," he said in a statement on Saturday.

The augmented reality game, launched in early July, uses Google Maps to overlay reality with Pokemon creatures.

It has also brought players into places of worship, such as St Mary's Cathedral.

"We hope that the grandeur of a building such as St Mary's has lifted their thoughts and minds towards the transcendent and their eyes away from their phones," a statement from the Roman Catholic archdiocese in the Daily Telegraph said.
