Investigations continue into the death of a diver who was rescued from waters off Sydney's northern beaches.

Lifesavers at Shelly Beach, near Manly, rescued the man on Thursday evening following reports a swimmer was in trouble.

The man, aged in his 60s, lost consciousness soon after he was pulled out and later died in hospital.

Initial reports suggested a second diver was missing, however, a NSW Police spokeswoman told AAP the man was alone when he got into difficulty.
