Death threats over plans to redevelop a Bondi Beach landmark

The battle of the Bondi Pavilion has descended into death threats as local council and furious residents dig in their heels over controversial plans to redevelop the historic building.

After a heated Waverly council meeting on Tuesday night saw officials verbally clash with concerned local residents and personalities, neither party is any closer to finding a middle ground resolution.

Waverly council mayor Sally Betts told the ABC she has received death threats over the proposal.

Sydney breakfast radio host Garry Linnell exacerbated the situation on Wednesday by describing the "ugly and overrated" suburb of Bondi being "full of tossers".

Linnell traded barbs with a Bondi resident who had phoned his 2UE show, with the host claiming he would like to take a hose with him to wash the "grubby" streets.

Ambiguity surrounding the proposed $38 million makeover sparked the public furore after council voted to proceed with the project despite a lack of public information or a supporting Development Application.

The redevelopment by heritage architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer for the 1929 building includes an upgraded entrance and atrium, a new 200-seat theatre and space for cafes and restaurants overlooking the beach.

While local council states the development is necessary in order to restore the ageing venue, residents believe the plans will commercialise the space and only serve the vested interests of "restauranteurs and tourists. Not the community," Di Smith said during Tuesday's meeting, Fairfax reports.

Australian actor Michael Caton and Hoodoo Gurus singer Dave Faulkner have vocally reprobated the proposed plan.
