A former police officer turned local councillor is calling for an urgent summit to tackle the drug problem in NSW.

Pat Daley, a councillor from the Sydney's northern beaches Warringah Council, will move a motion at a council meeting on Tuesday urging the state government to hold the drug summit.

"The escalating practice of poly drug use among young people is a major contributing factor to the increased violence we are seeing on our streets particularly at night," he said. "Enough is enough."

The move comes a day after the Salvation Army, with which Mr Daley works, reported a spike in the number of ice and speed users seeking help to recover in recent years.
