Complacency hinders NSW bushfire plans

Don't let a "she'll be right" attitude get in the way of preparing for bushfires and summer storms, the Rural Fire Service has warned.

It's the message NSW emergency services are trying to drum into residents as the state enters the summer period of unpredictable and wild weather.

Residents are being urged to take 15 minutes with their families to come up with a bushfire survival plan or carry out storm preparation.

Despite the message echoed year in, year out, it does not get through to some, RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons says.

While 80 per cent of people recognise they live in high-risk bushfire areas, less than 24 per cent of them have a plan.

"The research reinforces the message, that good old Aussie-ism of 'She'll be right mate, it won't happen to me' reigns supreme," Mr Fitzsimmons told reporters on Monday.

"We have got to do more."

Mr Fitzsimmons said NSW was set for a summer of above-average temperatures and below-average rainfall.

A police strike force targeting firebugs is in operation after 60 people were arrested last year for lighting fires.

One-third of those were juveniles, according to police.

Storms are forecast for this week, and the State Emergency Service has urged people to clean gutters and secure loose items.
