Clean-up care urged after Sydney storm

Residents working to repair the damage from a savage storm that tore through southern Sydney this week are being urged to take care during the clean-up.

Power is still being restored to several homes in Kurnell after powerful winds and storms on Wednesday ripped off roofs, overturned trucks and destroyed property.

Police say residents should take extra care during the clean-up, especially while conducting risky activities such as placing tarps on roofs.

Locals were also still being warned of the danger of airborne asbestos in older homes.

Anyone who did not have a genuine reason for being in the area should stay away, police said.

"It is likely anyone who is attending the area without good reason will be stopped and spoken to by police," a NSW police statement said.

Police have also urged people to keep a close watch on small children in the area because of the many heavy vehicles on roads there.

After rebuilding about two-thirds of the local network, Ausgrid workers will on Saturday go from home to home restoring electricity.

The Baird government has announced financial support to the areas impacted worst in the Sutherland shire, including Kurnell, Randwick, Waverley and Woollahra.

It allows eligible individuals and families to apply for financial assistance for damaged items and to fix up their homes.

It's estimated Wednesday's record-setting 213km/h winds and storms caused damage running into the tens of millions of dollars.
