The chimney stacks of New South Wales’ Munmorah power station have been brought down today, marking the beginning of the site’s demolition.

The former coal power station, in the Central Coast town of Colongra, had run for 45 years before it closed in 2012 and was decommissioned two years later, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Delta Electricity, the station’s operator, said it was no longer economically viable to operate due to its ageing infrastructure and high maintenance costs.

A 500m exclusion zone was put into place today, as the chimney stacks were demolished.

Two explosions then brought the two 155m stacks down.
