A four-year-old boy has died and his mother remains in a critical condition after a holiday house caught fire near the Snowy Mountains.

The 35-year-old mother was airlifted to Canberra Hospital with burns to her face and upper body.

The family from Victoria were on Thursday evening settling into their holiday home at Anglers Reach, near Adaminaby, and lit a fire in the open fireplace, which spread and destroyed the building.
