The body of a man has been found during a desperate search for a missing boater off the New South Wales South Coast.

The rescue mission was sparked when an empty boat washed ashore at Haywards Beach in Bermagui about 3.15pm on Tuesday last week.

The boat was registered to a 60-year-old man from Victoria.
