Barbecue smoke poisons five in NSW

Five people, including two police officers, have suffered suspected carbon monoxide poisoning after a barbecue was lit inside a home in the state's central west.

Emergency services were called to Back Cullen Road at Portland, near Bathurst, just after midnight on Thursday, where they found one man unconscious and two needing medical assistance, police said.

The two officers who attended the incident had to carry the three occupants - a 69-year-old woman and two men aged 72 and 79 - from the home.

All five people were taken to Lithgow Hospital.

The 79-year-old has since been flown to Nepean Hospital.

The two officers were released from hospital on Thursday morning, while the other two elderly people are expected to be released later in the day.
