Ban reversal a win for battlers: trainer

It's a win for the battlers.

Trainer Shayne Stiff says NSW premier Mike Baird's decision to reverse the ban on greyhound racing gives everyone in the industry hope.

"I think the future's very bright for every owner, trainer and breeder in NSW today," Mr Stiff, from Dubbo, told media outside the Wentworth Park greyhound track in inner Sydney on Tuesday.

His comments came hours after Mr Baird announced the about face following a backlash from coalition MPs, the racing community and media.

Mr Stiff and Greyhound Breeders Owners and Trainers Association (GBOTA) head Brenton Scott said they were relieved at the decision.

Fellow trainer Annette Fleming said she and her husband were planning to leave NSW so they could continue their family's 40-year legacy in the industry.

"We were going to Queensland next week to look at a couple of properties," she said.

"We want to survive, we don't want to be brought down by the bad ones."

Mr Scott said his organisation would do everything in its power to prevent and prosecute animal cruelty, including live baiting.

Improved surveillance, unscheduled visits to trainers' and breeders' properties and greater oversight were some measures Mr Scott mentioned to better police the industry.
