Baird won't rule out chemical castration

Chemical castration for convicted child sex offenders is not NSW government policy but Mike Baird says he won't rule it out.

The stance follows recent comments by deputy premier Troy Grant to the effect that chemical castration should be considered for perpetrators of child sex abuse.

"We will always be guided by medical evidence, by the experts on this, but at the moment it is not government policy," Mr Baird said on Thursday.

But the premier said he was not ruling anything out when asked if he agreed with Mr Grant.

"My view is we need to do everything possible to deter anyone undertaking this horrendous child abuse," he said.

"We will continue to take any action needed to ensure we clamp down on child sex offences. I think the community would expect that."

Mr Baird has promised tougher sentences for people who sexually assault children under 10 years old.
