Australia's oldest man dies aged 110

Australia's oldest man has died aged 110.

Alfred Date died at Peninsula Village nursing home at Umina Beach, New South Wales, yesterday, an employee from Bryan J Reid Funeral Services said.

He will be farewelled at the Greenway Chapel & Memorial Gardens, Green Point, next Tuesday.

Born in the UK in 1905, Date spent the last 30 years living in Davistown before moving to Umina Beach home.

In the latter years of his life, the father-of-seven and great-great-grandfather took up knitting woollen jumpers specifically for penguins to wear in the event of an oil spill.

Date said last year he was all too happy to help the penguins.

"The girls who used to work for me, they'll tell you I'm a sucker. I can't say no," he said.

"It's a good way of getting along in life. You make friends all the time but you don't make a fool of yourself either."

Date's 110th birthday last year was marked by a visit from Governor-General Peter Cosgrove, as well as from the coach of A-League side the Central Coast Mariners, the Central Coast Gosford Express Advocate reports.

He has previously described the secret to longevity as "waking up every morning".
