A man has been left with brain damage and paraplegia following a savage attack involving a baseball bat in Sydney's west.

The 33-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were at Woodward Park in Liverpool on May 10 when four men in dark clothing approached them.

One attacker hit the man with a baseball bat, prompting him to fall on the ground and lose consciousness.

The attackers kicked the man as he lay on the ground before fleeing.

The distraught woman contacted police.

The man is still in hospital receiving treatment for a fractured skull, bruising and brain damage.

Detectives have released a COMFIT picture of a man linked to the assault.

He is described as being of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern appearance, about 20 years old with short black hair and brown eyes.
