Rock anglers have been warned to take safety precautions after police searching for a man swept into the ocean found a body in Sydney's south.

Its thought the fisherman, in his 50s, was not wearing a life vest when he entered the water at Cape Solander, Kurnell, on Sunday.

An extensive rescue operation was launched after police were called after 1pm and a body, believed to be the missing man's, was found about 4.30pm.

Police say rock fishermen should always wear a life jacket, check weather conditions, fish in groups and never turn their back on the sea.

They are also encouraged to carry a mobile phone, never fish in exposed areas during rough seas and tell friends or family where they're going.
