Alleged wife-beater denied bail in Sydney

A Sydney man is accused of attacking his former partner in her home before telling her: "If you call anyone, I'll cut your throat like ISIS."

Kamiran Naama appeared via video link in Parramatta Local Court on Monday after he was arrested over the weekend and charged with assaulting Katrin Mirza and occasioning actual bodily harm, intimidating her and breaching an apprehended domestic violence order.

Prosecutors allege Naama, who arrived in Australia from Iraq in December 2014, told Ms Mirza: "If you call anyone, I'll cut your throat like ISIS ... What ISIS is doing at the moment, I'll cut your head."

He is accused of subjecting the woman to "prolonged violence" and punching her numerous times in her Pendle Hill home on Saturday morning.

Police arrived shortly after the alleged attack and took a number of photographs of Ms Mirza, the court heard.

But a solicitor representing Naama on Monday asked for him to be released on bail, saying that he intends to fight the charges and has claimed his wife punched herself as part of a plan to have him deported.

"(He says) he was trying to stop her. He also says that she said she was going to police to make sure that he would be returned back to the country where he comes from," she said.

The lawyer told Monday's brief bail hearing the injuries depicted in police photographs "could be consistent with my client's version that she was harming herself because she wants him to be deported, to get rid of him".

The court heard Naama does not have a job and is not on Centrelink benefits, and is eking out a living as a shop hand.

Magistrate Karen Stafford said the prosecution case appeared strong.

"This is an allegation of an extremely serious domestic assault involving an assault to his former wife on numerous parts of her body and over a period of time," she said.

"It occurred in her home in the presence of (young) children, and the assault also included very serious threats."

Ms Stafford said the alleged ADVO breach showed no bail condition she could impose could ensure the alleged victim's safety.

"This appears to me to be a very strong case given the photographs before the court, which in my opinion are consistent with the alleged attack," the magistrate said.

"Bail must be refused, and is refused."

Naama's case is due to return before Fairfield Local Court on March 4.
