A man is behind bars after allegedly committing a series of abductions, and rapes of several women, including teenagers, in the NSW Hunter region over the past three years.

The 27-year-old man allegedly indecently and sexually assaulted five women, aged 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 between November 2013 and January, police said.

The man was arrested in Maitland on Saturday and later charged with 28 offences, including 12 counts of sexual intercourse without consent, nine counts of assault with act of indecency, three counts of take/detain person to obtain advantage and three counts of committing an act of indecency with a person 16-year-old or over.

He was refused bail at a court appearance on Sunday and will appear in court at the end of February.
