Alleged NSW murderer to give evidence

A quadriplegic accused of the stabbing murder of his on-off girlfriend is expected to tell a judge on Thursday what led to a fatal struggle with a kitchen knife.

Michael James Quinn, 27, is on trial in the Sydney Supreme Court for the murder of Cherie Vize in July 2013 at his family's Wollongong home.

The crown has argued Quinn stabbed Ms Vize when he found out she had another lover.

However, psychiatrists who interviewed Quinn from prison have testified he told them he wanted the relationship to end and had no intention of killing her.

Quinn told Dr Richard Furst and Dr Stephen Allnutt that he was trying to kill himself when Ms Vize tried to stop him and the knife was accidentally plunged into her neck.

Horrified at her injuries, Quinn told the psychiatrists he decided to cripple himself by stabbing himself in the abdomen, chest, neck and spine.
