A Sydney man accused of using a nail-studded piece of wood to attack his girlfriend's brother has been freed on bail.

Shadi Jheir, 33, successfully launched a bid for release at Parramatta Local Court after being charged with assaulting the 42-year-old man on Friday afternoon.

It's alleged he struck the older man in the face with a piece of wood with nails protruding from it at a Peakhurst Heights property in Sydney's south, causing a deep laceration.

Jheir's legal aid lawyer told the court self defence was "quite clearly" a live issue in the case.

The victim was taken to St George Hospital for treatment.

Jheir thanked the magistrate via videolink on Saturday after being granted strict conditional bail.

He has been barred from contacting the victim or coming near the property where the attack took place, and he must forfeit a surety, the court heard.

Jheir is due to front Sutherland Local Court on Monday charged with wounding with intend to cause grievous bodily harm.
