Sydney shooting murder suspect behind bars

A man accused of shooting dead an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a violent feud in southwest Sydney will remain behind bars after being refused bail.

Matthew Glenn Russell, 28, appeared at Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday after handing himself in to police on Tuesday.

Russell sat silent and still in the glass-encased dock as supporters blew kisses to him and his mother whispered "stay strong".

Police will allege he opened fire on brothers Latu Vakuata and Tyson Parker in Heckenberg about 6.30pm last Friday following an earlier altercation.

Driving while disqualified along Matthew Street, Russell allegedly missed the pair with gunshots fired from a pistol, but hit 46-year-old Quasay Jabbar Al Mhanawi.

Mr Al Mhanawi was sitting in his parked car speaking on the mobile phone when he was struck by the bullets.

The father-of-one died at the scene.

He was farewelled by hundreds of mourners at a funeral in Liverpool on Tuesday and was remembered as a peaceful, family man.

Russell did not apply for bail and it was formally refused when he appeared in court on Wednesday.

His lawyer, Fadi Abbas, said Russell intended to launch a bail application in the future.

Outside court, Russell's family remained silent when asked if they knew where he had been hiding before his surrender, or if they had anything to say to the slain man's family.

Two men shielded the family and shoved news cameras away as they were led into a local cafe.

Russell faces murder and attempted murder charges, as well as firearms and driving offences.

He's expected to appear next via video link at Campbelltown Local Court on May 18.

Five people have also been charged with concealing a serious offence since the shooting.
