Accused sword killer son denied bail

A man accused of murdering his father with a samurai sword so he could claim life insurance has been denied bail by a NSW judge.

Michael Phillip Martin, 28, is due to stand trial later this year charged with brutally murdering his father Michael Anthony Martin, 46, at Murwillumbah in northern NSW in June 2014.

He has also been charged over an earlier botched attempt on his father's life in April 2014.

At a NSW Supreme Court bail hearing on Thursday, defence lawyer Stuart Percy argued that Martin's incarceration in Cessnock Correctional Centre, in the Hunter region, made it difficult to prepare the complex defence case.

But Justice Ian Harrison said this did not justify Martin's release on bail and cited the risk of him fleeing.

"The case outlined by the Crown is, if not overwhelming, at least very strong," Justice Harrison said.

Martin's former wife Candace Martin has also been charged over Mr Martin senior's murder.

Another woman, Jessica Honey Fallon, has been charged over the failed attempt.

Martin junior and Candace Martin are due to have their charges formally presented in the NSW Supreme Court on Friday.
