Accused killer bailed before NSW retrial

A Sydney woman facing a retrial over the stabbing death of her younger cousin will be freed from Silverwater Women's Correctional Centre on bail.

The Criminal Court of Appeal last year quashed Katherine Abdallah's manslaughter conviction and ordered her to be retried over the death of Suzie Sarkis at a Brighton-Le-Sands townhouse in 2013.

The Crown opposed Abdallah's bail application on Thursday, saying she had a history of using illicit drugs while on bail and was therefore at risk of offending. Abdallah was also a flight risk because she knew the strength of the case against her, the Crown argued.

NSW Supreme Court Justice Helen Wilson agreed there were risks, but said she felt they could be mitigated.

Justice Wilson said it didn't seem to her that Abdallah was at risk of committing offences that put the public at jeopardy, and she hadn't fled while on bail during her previous trial.

She granted Abdallah bail before her November retrial provided she reside at a south-west Sydney home, observe a strict curfew, report to police daily and surrender her passport.

A responsible person must also agree to forfeit $10,000 if Abdallah fails to appear in court, she said.
