A Sydney woman is in hospital with serious head injuries after a car mounted a kerb, flipped and ploughed into her.

The vehicle left the road and struck a pram before careering into the pedestrian, who was walking along the footpath on Chatswood's busy Victoria Avenue on Friday morning, police say.

The woman in her 30s was taken to Royal North Shore hospital in a critical condition.

The child in the pram escaped serious injury while another woman, believed to be the child's mother, was treated by paramedics for shock.

The 67-year-old driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital for mandatory substance testing.
