Full list of upcoming NSW train maintenance and repair disruptions

9News Staff

Powered by

Millions of commuters in NSW will spend months battling train disruptions as a major backlog of repairs to 2000km of track is carried out.

The state government warned travellers in June to prepare for "a year or more of pain" as the government fast-tracked a major $97 million maintenance blitz after a review found huge backlogs caused equipment failures and subsequently major shutdowns.

Significant work needs to be done to every line across the Sydney Trains network and while it will mostly impact those trying to get around on weekends and weeknights, it's also going to bleed out into weekdays, potentially causing commuter chaos.

Here's everything we know about where and when the train delays will take place.

Who will be impacted by train delays or cancellations?

It's called the Sydney Rail Repair Plan but it's not just those travelling in Sydney's CBD or its surrounds who will be copping train cancellations.

Buses will replace trains, lines will be diverted or timetables changed all across the entire network.

This means north along the Central Coast, to Newcastle and into the Hunter region, like Muswellbrook, Dungog or Scone.

It's also impacting southern lines down to Wollongong, Bomaderry and Kiama.

Travelling west to the Blue Mountains may be more problematic on some days, with trips to Bathurst or Lithgow in the Central Tablelands also impacted.

"Around 600,000 weekend passengers will lose normal train services and need to use replacement buses over the next 12 months," the Sydney Rail Repair Plan states.

Some journeys may take longer as temporary rail speed restrictions are put into place in compromised areas.

What should I do if my line is impacted?

This all depends on what area you live in and where you're looking to go.

Normal bus services and the light rail in Sydney is not impacted by the Sydney Rail Repair Plan, nor is the ferry.

So if you've planned to head out of town to the Blue Mountains on an impacted day, it may be better to reschedule for another weekend and instead jump on a ferry to Manly.

Commuters could choose to drive on days with disruptions, however the roads may be busier as people try to avoid trackwork.

We will continue to update how, when and where disruptions will take place when the information is published by Sydney Trains.

Below is the timetable outlined until November.

You can search for your line or dates to help inform your plans.
