Commuters on Sydney's train network are experiencing major delays across multiple services this morning due to unscheduled industrial action.

Services on the Blue Mountains, the Central Coast/Newcastle and South Coast lines are affected.

A limited number of services have resumed since this morning's strike, but passengers are still experiencing significant delays across inter city lines.

One commuter travelling from Gosford to Sydney this morning posted a screenshot of his options for public transport to Twitter, showing a five-hour journey as a result of the delays.

Passengers are being advised to allow plenty of extra travel time, check real time apps or consider alternative travel arrangements with delays expected to continue throughout the day.

The delays are due to unplanned industrial action taken by the Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU).

"Transport for NSW is incredibly disappointed at the unplanned industrial action taken by the RTBU and its members," a Transport for NSW spokesperson said in a statement.

"Transport for NSW apologises to customers affected today by these actions."

Despite the delays, Transport for NSW says the majority of suburban Sydney train services will operate as planned.
