NSW telco could face $10 million in fines

A Sydney-based phone and internet company could face up to $10 million in fines after it was warned by the communications watchdog over industry rule breaches.

Infinity Telecom's website didn't have a complaints handling process, information on financial hardship assistance or detailed information about its NBN plans, the Australian Communications and Media Authority found.

ACMA ordered the company to fix the website or face the prospect of fines up to $10 million.

The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman has welcomed the action after previously trying to help Infinity fix its website before referring it to the authority.

Infinity blamed website developers for the problem after it was contacted by the authority in May.

Authority member Fiona Cameron said it was important vulnerable customers were aware of their options.

"'Just because you aren't a big provider, doesn't mean you don't have to take your obligations seriously," Ms Cameron said.

Some of the information missing included a breakdown of the different internet download speeds during peak times.
