NSW rail car spots handed to commuters

More than 1000 free car parking spaces reserved for NSW rail staff will be handed over to commuters.

Some 370 spaces around western Sydney and central coast interchange hubs will make up the first tranche of parking spots to be made available to the general public.

NSW Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian says the rest of the spots will be opened up over the next 18 months as part of her government's Customer First reforms.

"This is a victory for commonsense," she said on Monday.

"For too long, one of the biggest complaints of customers has been the availability of parking at train stations, and today we are showing that the NSW government is listening, and working hard to improve journeys for public transport customers."

Many of these car spaces have for decades been fenced off for staff use only, Ms Berejiklian said.

Other promised changes on the NSW rail network over the next 18 months include train station "deep cleans" and improved security at 19 key stations, along with targeted operations by the Police Transport Command and transport officers.
