Police have retracted their appeal for information about damage sustained to the NSW Police Force Wall of Remembrance in the Domain in central Sydney, after it was established it was in fact damage done earlier this year.

A ranger this afternoon thought 15 panels had been damaged with scratches over the NSW Police Crest and panels containing the names of deceased police officers.

However, upon further investigation by a specialist team, police confirmed the damage was the original damage from May this year.

"This memorial is a sacred place for all NSW police officers and the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice whilst serving the people of this state," Superintendent David Donohue said earlier.

Police have thanked the community for its support and said they are still waiting for a full reconstruction of the memorial to take place.
