Hunt for attacker after man fatally stabbed in busy area
Police are hunting for an attacker who fatally stabbed a man in Newcastle, NSW, in a busy area.
The man in his 40s was in critical condition after being stabbed near an apartment block on Hassell Street in Hamilton South about 3.30pm on Saturday.

He was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries a short time later.
Superintendent Kylie Endemi told reporters on Sunday that police are trying to understand how he died and believe there are people who may have seen what happened.
“Hassell Street, Hamilton South, and the surrounding area is a busy street,” she said.
“We know that there would have been foot traffic and vehicular traffic in the area at the time, and we would make a plea for anyone who has any information, any dashcam footage, or any CCTV footage, to please assist us.”

Endemi assured the community that they are safe and there is no ongoing threat.
A crime scene has been established and a strike force investigation is underway as officers comb through the area and talk to witnesses.
“We will find the person who has committed this crime,” Endemi said.
