NSW Nationals revolt over Senate ticket

Retiring Nationals veteran John Williams says his party should consider running a separate NSW Senate ticket to the Liberals at the federal election.

Under an existing agreement, the Nationals will get third spot on a joint coalition ticket, but party members consider this to be unwinnable and want second place.

Senator Williams said the predominance of Liberal senators in NSW was "unfair".

"In my opinion if the Nationals can't get second position on that ticket I think we should run it alone because we have nothing to lose and a fair bit to gain," Senator Williams told Sky News on Tuesday.

However, he said it was an issue for the two party head offices to sort out.

Former Nationals deputy leader Fiona Nash lost her Senate seat in the dual-citizenship saga, replaced by Liberal Jim Nolan.

The NSW Nationals have chosen four Senate candidates, led by government relations strategist Perin Davey.
