No bail for accused Newcastle baby murderer

A mother charged with murder after her six-week-old baby was found with her throat cut will remain behind bars.

The 26-year-old woman, who can't be identified for legal reasons, had her case briefly mentioned in Newcastle Bail Court on Saturday.

The mother, who did not apply bail, is accused of murdering her baby girl at their Wallsend home in the NSW Hunter region on Friday morning.

Her case was adjourned to Newcastle Local Court on July 29.

Police were called to the her home on Friday and found the baby girl with a fatal wound to her throat.

The mother was arrested at the scene as other family members wailed and grieved on the street.

The woman's husband and another child were also at the suburban scene when police arrived.

The mother was expected to undergo a psychiatric assessment.

Neighbours say the "happy and normal" family from west Africa moved to the area about six months ago.
