Police have fined a man for allegedly lighting a fire during a total fire ban in central west NSW.

The blaze was lit at a Lewis Ponds property on Thursday evening and burnt out about 12 hectares of grassland, police say.

It also prompted the Rural Fire Service to call in special aircraft and tankers to fight the blaze.

A 68-year-old woman sustained burns to her upper body and was taken to the Orange Health Service for treatment.

Police said two men, aged 65 and 72, and a second woman, aged 60, were spoken to at the scene.

The younger man was issued with an infringement notice for fail to comply with fire ban and fine $1100.
