NSW Government supports bail in Kogarah fatal crash case

The NSW government has backed a police decision to grant bail to an unlicensed driver accused of crashing into a Sydney pharmacy and killing a teenage girl.

Sydney schoolgirl Aneri Patel, 16, was waiting for the bus after an exam when a 4WD hit her and smashed through the shopfront of a pharmacy at Kogarah, in Sydney's south, on Monday.

Puipuimaota Galuvao has been charged with offences including dangerous driving occasioning death and driving despite never having a licence.

Galuvao, the sister of two-time NRL premiership player Joe Galuvao, was granted bail to appear in court in October.

Aneri's parents and supporters visited Kogarah Police Station to vent their anger about Galuvao's release on bail yesterday.

NSW Attorney-General Brad Hazzard said it was a "difficult and extremely sad event" but the police decision making process "should be supported".

In granting bail, police would have carefully considered whether the release of the defendant would impact on the protection of the community and the probability of the defendant appearing in court, he added.

The defendant's background and community ties would have also been considered.

Mr Hazzard has asked the Director of Public Prosecutions to apply all necessary resources to the case.

The crash occurred at the same spot where a 20-year-old fashion student Emma Hansen was killed by a car while waiting for a bus in 2007.
