Australia’s first female governor to step down after 13 years
After 13 years as the wise and compassionate soul at the heart of NSW politics and diplomacy, NSW’ first female governor is enjoying her last days at Government House.
Dame Marie Bashir will step down as governor on October 1, to be replaced by former defence force chief General David Hurley.
With a strong passion for the rights of indigenous Australians, while also raising awareness of mental health and depression, Dame Marie has spent more than a decade shying away from the spotlight.
An engaging and dignified woman, she has been a presence at hundreds of engagements throughout the state.
Her retirement has been prompted by her respect for those who have fought for our country.
“Sir Roden Cutler, a war hero who lost a leg serving this country, I would like to think of him as the longest serving governor,” she said.
“I can’t say I have any regrets, I’ve been blessed."
