Sydney defence lawyer shot outside home in broad daylight in 'targeted' attack

A Sydney defence lawyer has been shot in a "targeted" attack outside a home in the city's south-west by an unknown person in broad daylight.

NSW Police said there were reports of gunshots fired just before 10.30am on Wednesday on Narelle Crescent in Greenacre.

When they got to the scene, 30-year-old Mahmoud Abbas was found with gunshot wounds.

"It's understood the man was outside the home when he was approached by an unknown person and shot," police said.

Abbas was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Detective Superintendent Adam Johnson said Abbas is about to undergo surgery for his injuries.

Police believe it was a targeted attack.

"This is clearly a targeted and brazen shooting," Johnson said.

Johnson said police will be investigating links to other recent shootings that have taken place across the city.

"The motive and reasoning behind it, I don't know. It's too early to speculate," he added.

A crime scene has been established as officers investigate the daylight crime.

Underworld figure Mahmoud "Brownie" Ahmad was shot dead on the same street in April last year.
