Police issue warning as Christmas road toll continues to climb

Six people have been killed on NSW roads in less than a week, following the death of a young driver in a single-vehicle crash on Christmas Day.

Police say the crash occurred when a car left the road, hit a tree and caught fire in Parkes in the state's central west about 7.15am.

The driver and sole occupant is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be an 18-year-old man.

The incident was one of 37 major crashes reported on day six of the Christmas-new year road policing operation

Six people have died and there have been 432 major crashes since the operation began on Friday.

"NSW Police are disappointed that another young person has lost their life on our roads - on a day that should have been filled with joy," Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said in a statement on Thursday.

"With more people on our roads over the next few weeks, please heed our warnings and remember to plan ahead to avoid being tired.

"Make sure you are well rested before getting behind the wheel, plan to take regular breaks and share the driving with a friend or family member if you can."
