NSW body modifier charged over woman's death

A NSW man has been charged with manslaughter over the death of a woman whose body was found by her seven-year-old daughter.

Police allege Samantha Strickland had undergone a body modification procedure at Brendan Russell's tattoo shop on the Central Coast.

Authorities believe she had a "plastic snowflake" implanted in her right hand three weeks before her death, and had suffered complications as a result.

During the painful procedure, plastic is implanted under the top layers of skin so it is visible.

"The body of the 30-year-old woman was discovered by her seven-year-old daughter in their Toowoon Bay home on Wednesday, April 12, 2017," New South Wales Police said in a statement.

"A post mortem examination found septicaemia was the cause of death, specifically an infected right hand."

Following the incident, detectives from the Brisbane Water and Tuggerah Lakes Police Districts formed a joint strike force, codenamed Nellievale.

The man was arrested at his home in Terrigal on the NSW Central Coast around midday today.

The man was taken to the Gosford Police Station where he was charged with manslaughter in connection to the first incident and grievous bodily harm, relating to the second.

He was refused Police bail and is expected to face Gosford Local Court tomorrow (Tuesday 14 August).

The man was charged with prohibition of female genital mutilation in May this year in relation to a complaint by a third woman in 2016.
