The Cronulla Sharks and Sydney Roosters have denied a report that their players were attacked at a Sydney hotel.

Nine News' chief NRL reporter Danny Weidler claimed last night that Sharks duo Jack Bird and Valentine Holmes were assaulted at a Coogee nightspot after coming to the aid of Roosters player Shaun Kenny-Dowall.

It's alleged they were hit from behind by a patron who'd been arguing with Kenny-Dowall and that Holmes had to be helped to his feet by fellow patrons.

But both clubs have since denied the report.

Cronulla chief executive Lyall Gorman said no such attack occurred, but said an intoxicated patron who was 'causing drama' was escorted from the bar by security.

It is understood Kenny-Dowall was at the venue having dinner with family and saw an incident but was not involved in any way.

None of the NRL players were asked to leave.

The NRL has vowed to investigate the matter.
