A man has been charged with murder over the body found in a car in Geelong, Victoria, at the weekend.

The corpse of a 41-year-old father was discovered on Seaforth Street, North Shore, after police received reports of a burglary on Sunday morning.

Officers were searching the area when they opened the boot of a Holden Commodore and found the dead man.

This afternoon a 40-year-old local man was arrested in Lara, in Geelong’s north-east, and charged with one count of murder.

The accused is expected to be remanded during an out of sessions hearing shortly, police said.

The alleged victim’s identity is yet to be released by detectives.

It was earlier revealed friends of the victim were recently concerned for his welfare after receiving an unusual request from him, the Herald Sun reports.

"It was only a couple of weeks ago he texted me needing a few dollars. I gave him what I had, which wasn’t much," a friend told the newspaper.

"I thought it strange when he asked but I didn’t question him.

"I did ask him if everything was all right. He sort of brushed me off with 'nah not really, but all good'.

"It was a bit of a shock to the system when I got the call (notifying him of the man’s death)."
