The United States is yet to ask Australia to boost its troop numbers in Afghanistan beyond those already helping train local security forces.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has given Foreign Minister Julie Bishop a detailed explanation of Washington's new strategy to support the Afghan government and combat a Taliban resurgence.

Mr Tillerson was delighted with Australia's existing contribution to coalition forces - recently boosted by 30 to a total of 300 - and did not make any request for extra troops, Ms Bishop told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.
