No 'slippage' before fatal RFS crash

A passenger in a Rural Fire Service (RFS) truck involved in a fatal crash has denied the vehicle began to slide moments before colliding with a car.

Ian Jeffery Wells was driving the truck on the F3, north of Sydney, on October 18, 2012, after responding to a nine-car crash.

Wells, of Kariong, allegedly performed an illegal u-turn onto the northbound lanes of the road and collided with the car.

A woman in the car died at the scene while her husband was hospitalised with serious injuries.

Wells was later charged with dangerous driving causing death and negligent driving.

A hearing in the Downing Centre Court on Monday heard from fellow RFS member Paul Barwick, who was a passenger in the truck.

The court heard he and Wells left the nine-car crash scene to respond to another incident, involving spilt orange juice, further north along the F3.

Mr Barwick told police Wells approached a u-turn bay about 40km/h before creeping through the turn.

But Mr Barwick denied there was any "slippage" of the truck.

Asked whether the truck shuddered as it moved into the turn, Mr Barwick said he couldn't recall.
